The Foundation

Study Experience Abroad with SEA will allow you the chance to completely immerse yourself in another culture. You will have the opportunity to discover a new country, become more independent, improve your language skills, and make life-long friends. As a high school student, you can choose from an individualized program made just for you 30 different countries, varying in length from three weeks to an academic year.

SEA is a small leading non-profit exchange organization with premier programming and dedicated to international education and cultural exchange. Since 1975, the leadership of SEA has provided dynamic study abroad experiences for many high school students, enabling them to live and study all over the world for summer, semester and academic year programs.

As an SEA, Study Experience Abroad student you will receive:

  • International and U.S. domestic airfare, from the nearest major U.S. airport
  • Accommodation
    • Placement with a carefully selected host family (most programs)
    • Dorm accommodation in a residence hall (some summer programs)
  • Meals with your host family or in the residence hall cafeteria
  • Placement in a local high school for Academic Year and Semester programs
  • Accident and illness insurance
  • 24-hour emergency assistance, should the need arise
  • Pre-departure and in-country orientations

SEA is the fastest growing leader in cultural exchange programs for high school students because we deliver a specialized programming to our participants.

We believe you should study abroad with SEA for several reasons:

Choices. You can choose from programs in over 30 countries. You can also decide the duration of your stay (summer, semester or an academic year).

Experience. We've been managing high school and cultural exchange programs for 30 years, and have worked with students and host families in more than 60 countries.

Support. We will assist you every step of the way by helping you design a program just for you, preparing you through our pre-program orientations, and providing ungoing country support. With SEA, you'll receive dependable overseas support, including a local community representative and 24-hour emergency assistance, should the need arise.

Safety. Safety is our number one priority. Your safety is ensured for our students by thoroughly screening and preparing families and students.

Individualized Inclusive Programs. Our individualized programs include more features than many other study experience abroad programs. Choose Your Program

Whatever your interests and backgrounds are, SEA, Study Experience Abroad, will make an individualized program just for YOU. Yes, we have industry leading programs that you can choose from, however most of our students and families enjoy developing their experience together with our professionals.

Below are some of the traditional programs:

Academic Year, Fall and Spring Semester Programs:

Allows you to fully immerse yourself in your host country’s culture and at the same time improve our language skills.

On an academic year, fall or spring semester program you will:

  • Live with a carefully selected host family
  • Attend a local high school
  • Participate in school or community activities
  • Improve your language skills, depending on the country you choose

Summer Cultural Exploration

You can attend language or cultural classes in the morning, enjoy a organized activity in the afternoon, and explore your host country through organized weekend excursions. SEA students in each country are placed within close proximity to each other and attend the same classes, activities and excursions. No previous language experience is required for these programs.

On a four-week Summer Cultural Exploration program you will:

  • Live with a carefully selected host family or stay in a dorm with an On-Site Coordinator, depending on the country you choose
  • Attend language or cultural classes five days per week with other AYUSA students
  • Participate in weekday activities. Activities vary by host country and include: museum visits, film screenings, sports, cooking classes, and walking tours
  • Explore your host country through organized and guided weekend excursions

Summer Cultural Immersion

Experience your host country's culture in a way that a typical tourist cannot! Enjoy a summer to remember as you live with a host family in the country of your choice. No previous language experience is required for most of these programs.

On a three or four-week Summer Cultural Immersion program you will:

  • Live with a carefully selected host family
  • Learn a foreign language or improve your current foreign language skills by conversing with native speakers
  • Take part in your host family's daily activities
  • Have the opportunity to participate in community activities

Language Options

One of the greatest benefits of a studying experience abroad is the ability to learn a new language or strengthen your current foreign language skills. As you gain insight into another culture, you will strengthen your college application and prepare yourself for an international career. Many returning students tell us that their biggest personal success was going from limited language skills or classroom-only skills to near fluency in a second language. Some colleges grant credit for advanced second language skills gained while abroad. Choose your cultural adventure based on the language of your choice!

Where are You Going This Summer?

SEA offers two exciting program options for high school students this summer.

Summer Cultural Exploration:

Attend language or cultural classes in the morning and enjoy organized activities in the afternoon; activities range from salsa dancing and cooking classes, to scenic bike rides. Live with a carefully selected host family. These three or four-week programs include:

  • Language or cultural classes five days per week
  • Homestay with a carefully selected local family or dorm stay
  • Organized weekday activities (2 to 3 afternoons per week)
  • Included weekend excursions

Summer Cultural Exploration programs are offered in 8 countries. Specific program highlights include:

  • Exploring the rainforest and beaches of Manuel Antonio National Park in Alajuela, Costa Rica
  • Attending a theater performance in Oxford, England
  • Traveling to Paris for a three-day excursion which includes a tour of the Latin Quarter, the Musée D'Orsay, Amboise and Notre Dame all in France.
  • Spending two nights in Berlin and visiting some of the city's most important sites including the Brandenburg Gate and the infamous Checkpoint Charlie or visit Cologne, Germany
  • Discovering Rome during a two-day excursion which includes visits to sites such as Vatican City, the Colisseum, the Piazza Navona, Trinita dei Monti, Castel Sant'Angelo, and the museum of the Palazzo Borghese Florence, Italy
  • Tokyo, Japan - Visiting the coastal town of Kamakura, famous for its Great Buddha statue and beautiful temples and shrines
  • Oaxaca, Mexico - Enjoying the beautiful beaches of Puerto Escondido during a 3-day trip
  • Granada, Spain - Exploring Madrid, the capital of Spain and the fascinating city of Toledo during the program finale

Summer Cultural Immersion:

Summer Cultural Immersion experience in your host country's culture in a way that a typical tourist cannot! Live with a host family, take part in their daily activities and enjoy a summer to remember. No previous language experience is required. These three to four-week programs include:

  • Homestay with a carefully selected local family
  • Ability to immerse yourself in local language and culture

Summer Cultural Immersion programs are offerred in:

  • Brazil - Discover the warm family oriented culture of Brazil
  • France - Students may choose to stay with a family in the St. Malo, Arcachon or Brétigny areas.
  • Spain - Students will be placed in the Madrid, Barcelona or Salamanca areas.
